Flattery

To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman. Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids. For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life. Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned? So he that goeth in to his neighbour’s wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent...But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul. A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away. For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts. Proverbs 6:24-29 and Proverbs 6:32-35 KJV
What a great analogy, a prostitute costs the price of a loaf of bread while a married man and woman will cost a man his life if they commit adultery. That was Old Testament belief and written in the Laws per Deuteronomy 22:22-24 and Leviticus 20:10 that both the man and woman would be put to death if they committed adultery. Jesus changed the law to forgiveness and grace in John 8:3-11 (KJV):
And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
The Law made it death, Christ made it Forgiveness and Grace.
These verses in Proverbs took me back to college and my early years when I was a non-believer. When I would see a beautiful woman with her eyes or when she spoke flattering things about me as a man, it was an easy path to follow in lust. It was especially easy because I was insecure and introverted. It was tough for me to talk to a woman, let alone a beautiful one. My self-esteem was low, and the hint of flattering words from a woman would satisfy my soul. It took an act of the Lord to change my ways so as not to fall for the trap of a woman's looks or her sweet tongue.
Thank goodness for the Lord's forgiveness and grace. It changed my life and can change yours for those falling for the trap mentioned here in Proverbs. Ask the Lord to forgive you through His Grace when He died on the Cross for the salvation of mankind. He paid the price for liberty for us to do His will and plan for our lives.
