The Law is Fulfiled

The Law is Fulfiled

Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:19 King James

He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven Matthew 5:19 Douay Rheims

Therefore he that breaketh one of these least commandments, and teacheth thus men, shall be called the least in the realm of heavens; but he that doeth, and teacheth, shall be called great in the kingdom of heavens. Matthew 5:19 Wycliffe

Jesus sets the stage in Matthew 5:18-48 about the law and His role in fulfilling the Law, the Commandments and the Prophets.  We as Christians are to remember the Old Testament and use the wisdom and history wisely but we are Christ followers not OT Law followers.  Yes, history plays a key role in leading Christ to the Cross where the Old Testament gives us the historical context and backdrop to why Jesus Christ came in the first place.

Jesus goes onto list a bunch of Laws and some of the Ten Commandments taking them even a step further where even looking at a woman with lust if you are married is Adultery.  One of the keys ones most people miss is your "yeses" are "yeses" and your "no's" are "no's".  Dont make a commitment and than change the commitment.  The other big one is give to people who are in need who ask for money, turn them not away.  We are to love our enemies and bless even those who curse at us or say bad things about us.

The good news in Matthew 5:19 allows us to be forgiven of our sins against God and mankind.  We can't teach the Old Testament is still alive when Jesus Christ fulfilled it.  This includes the tithe which is Old Testament commandment and commitments.  Jesus continues in Matthew 6 that we are to give alms, perfect time to say tithe, but He uses alms and when you do give dont sound the alarm bells and tell everyone.

What the Law failed to do, Jesus Christ fulfilled to provide direct access through righteousness in order to access Heaven.  He calls out the Scribes and Pharisees that each Christian needs to be more righteous than the two religious groups during the time of Christ.  The New Testament specifically Matthew, Mark, Luke and John highlight the deficiencies of the two religious groups.  Jesus reminds us the sun rises on both the evil and the good and rains on the unjust and the just.  It is up to us to live for Christ and teach those who may be failing in the area of righteousness and religiousness i.e. practicing OT Laws and Commandments.  Be the light that shines bright in people's lives.
