Whose Wisdom?

Whose Wisdom?

1 Corinthians 2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. KJV

This was a fun blog to write because the Lord has shown me the errors of my worldly ways of my past as an Atheist/Agnostic verses the wisdom of the Lord now as a Christian.  One of the first books the Lord had me read, besides the Holy Bible, was The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan.  I highly recommend each of you read this book.  Here is quick snapshot of a verse which should resonate with all Christians.

"Now as Christian was walking solitary by himself, he espied one afar off come crossing over the field to meet him; and their hap was to meet just as they were crossing the way of each other. The gentleman’s name that met him was Mr. Wordly Wiseman: he dwelt in the town of Carnal Policy." Part I, The First Stage of Pilgrim's Progress.

As a new Christian at the time, I was following the same steps that Christian, the main character in the story, would follow in his journey, backpack of burdens and all.  John Bunyan knew how to create a set of Characters who when those of us first come to Christ to follow a journey towards the light away from darkness experience.  Some of the Characters include Obstinate and Pliable, Worldly Wiseman, Good-Will, Evangelist, Formalist, Hypocrisy, Piety, Prudence, Charity, and a host of others.  I love that Mr. Bunyan writes the gentleman's name was Mr. Worldly Wiseman from Carnal Policy.

When I was on my walk to God, plenty of people tried to steer me away from the Holy Bible using worldly wisdom to counter the truth of God's words.  There was also plenty of people who steered me on the right path, many of whom were on the wrong path themselves as strange as that sounds.  Lastly, there were very few Christians who led me to the well of the Lord in the wisdom of the truth of the Lord.  One of those is my wife Marcia who has amazing spiritual wisdom and great discernment in seeing people for who they are whether walking with God or away. We as Christians need to be careful who we gain advice from which leads me to this blog.  Whose wisdom are you following?

Paul talks about in 1 Corinthians 2:13 about worldly wisdom vs Godly wisdom.

"not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth" KJV

"not in the learned words of human wisdom; but in the doctrine of the Spirit" Douay Rheims

"not in wise words of man's wisdom, but in the  doctrine of the Spirit" Wycliffe

We see this especially true in today's society as spiritual wisdom is failing all around us from political, social, economical, and yes the Church aka religion.  You see worldly wise leaders manipulating the Word of God's truth around gender, sexuality, marriage, skin color, wealth, poverty, morality, politics in the Church, and so many more.  I love one of the last paragraphs John Bunyan writes in describing the end of Christian's journey on earth leading him the Jesus in Heaven.

"I see myself now at the end of my journey; my toilsome days are ended. I am going to see that head which was crowned with thorns, and that face which was spit upon for me. I have formerly lived by hearsay and faith; but now I go where I shall live by sight, and shall be with him in whose company I delight myself. I have loved to hear my Lord spoken of; and wherever I have seen the print of his shoe in the earth, there I have coveted to set my foot too. His name has been to me as a civet-box; yea, sweeter than all perfumes. His voice to me has been most sweet, and his countenance I have more desired than they that have most desired the light of the sun. His words I did use to gather for my food, and for antidotes against my faintings. He hath held me, and hath kept me from mine iniquities; yea, my steps hath he strengthened in his way."

Looking back 20+ years ago since my baptism, everything John Bunyan writes here is my walk to and with the Lord Jesus Christ.  The Lord has provided everything to me and my family.  I pray everyday, Lord give me the wisdom, knowledge, and understanding as well as guidance, protection, and security to do your will and plan for my life with Your hand heavy upon me and a hedge around me commanding your angels to guard me in my ways.  In discernment, the Lord has blessed me to fulfill the following passage  from 1 Corinthians 2:15,

"But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man." KJV

"But the spiritual man judgeth all things; and he himself is judged of no man."  Douay Rheims

"But a spiritual man deemeth all things, and he is deemed of no man." Wycliffe

I highly recommend you read all of 1 Corinthians as Paul outlines wisdom even further.  This blog wanted to introduce you to the Spirit of God and which wisdom are you thirsty after, the worlds or God's?
