Whatsoever

Philippians 4:8 & 11 KJV
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things… Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.”

In Galatians, we learned about “Liberty”. In Ephesians, we learned about “Walking in Love”. In Philippians, we are going to learn about “Whatsoever” in how to live a life that embraces truth, honesty, kindness, and goodness.  In Acts and Romans, we learned about Paul killing Christians and being converted by Jesus as he was blinded on a journey.  As Paul’s preaching journey grew over time, he suffered greatly after his conversion as he was beaten, imprisoned, shipwrecked and deathly ill to name a few in which I have none of these hardships. I imagine that is why Paul says he could do all things in Christ which strengthened him. 

In a telling moment, Paul reveals that through his suffering, many Christians have become bolder in their witnessing. I emphasize the word many because Paul uses some in the next sentence. Some that are preaching are full of envy and strife towards Paul’s preaching while some others have embraced Paul’s teaching in love. Paul sees the big picture in both, if Christ is being preached. It is like who cares what they think or say, as long as they are preaching Jesus Christ is Lord. That is all that matters as I have bigger things to attend for Jesus while here on earth.

Despite all his hardships, Paul remains joyful. He expresses a longing to be with Christ in Heaven, which he considers far better. However, he understands that, for the sake of the Philippians and other believers, it is more beneficial for him to remain alive and continue his work.  He explains that Jesus was very humble even though he was God in the flesh and is above every name that has walked on this earth. Paul reemphasizes in Philippians 2 as he did in Romans 17 that either here on earth or in Heaven, everyone will confess that Jesus is God and will bow their knee to God. 

Paul tells us in Chapter 2 we need to work on our own salvation through fear and trembling, that we remain holy and righteous without complaining or disputing with others.  We live in a crooked and perverse world, and we need to watch out for evil people and those that are trying to cause division.  We need to hold onto the word of life (Holy Bible) and shine as a light into this dark world. 

Which now brings us to how each of us are to be in the fallen world.

• Be Truthful
• Be Honest with others
• Be Righteous and Holy in Life
• Be free from Corruption and Immorality
• Be Kind
• Be good and positive, like a cheerleader to others
• Be content with what God has provided to you

As we face the challenges of this world, it is crucial to hold fast to the moral compass that points to God’s truth. Whether in abundance or in lack, we can find joy and contentment because we know that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. May we live out these virtues in a way that reflects God’s glory and shines as a light in the darkness.
